Mr D S Soutar
Mr Soutar has been a consultant plastic surgeon for over 25 years and was a consultant plastic surgeon at the Canniesburn Hospital in Glasgow.
Mr Soutar’s particular clinical interest in head and neck cancer has involved excision and reconstruction, particularly the role of microvascular surgery and free tissue transfer.
Other areas of clinical interest include skin malignancy, particularly cutaneous melanoma and oculoplastic surgery, particularly the management of ptosis.
His research interests have also concerned head and neck cancer, particularly on the objective assessment of speech rehabilitation in patients undergoing treatment for oral cancer, the role of viruses in recurrent and locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck, sentinel node biopsy in oral and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma and lymph node mapping in the head and neck and gene mutations in oral cancer.
His work in plastic, reconstructive surgery for the head and neck has led him to receive awards such as the John Baron Prize, the Mentor Prize, the British Journal of Plastic Surgery Prize, and the Mowlem Award.
Dr L Calabrese
Dr Calabrese received his degree in medicine from the University of Bologna and specialised in plastic surgery at the University of Bari.
He is currently the Director of the oral cavity and oroharyngeal unit at the European Institute of Oncology in Milan, Italy.
Dr Calabrese has performed over 1500 major operations for head and neck tumours and over 500 major reconstructions with myocutaneous and free microvascular flaps.
As a member of the Italian National Study Group for Head and Neck Cancer screening he is actively concerned with prevention of head and neck tumours in health centres of the Italian League Against Cancer. He has co-authored 58 publications on head and neck oncology and plastic surgery and is a lecturer on head and neck oncology at University of Pavia.
